Let's talk about money

talkin' taboos & The Discussion Experiment

Invitation posted by Igor

For some of us, discussing our finances is even harder than talking about sex. Yet we all struggle with similar questions:

What role does money play in my life? How much money do I really need? Am I thinking about it too much – or not enough? Does money make me feel proud or ashamed? Might I be richer or poorer than I think?

In our next event we want to talk about these kinds of questions in a safe and curious atmosphere. Among other things, we will use anonymous online polls to get a bird’s-eye view of our relationship with money.

We will experiment with structured and open discussion elements to spark meaningful exchange.

For this event, I teamed up with Stef Lenk and her event series talkin‘ taboos. Stef has been running her project since 2021 with the goal of creating a space where strangers can have deep conversations about otherwise rarely discussed topics – free from assumptions and expectations we frequently encounter in those who know us (you can find her talkin‘ taboos meetup group here).

Let me know if you have any questions!

The discussion experiment is an event series with the aim to create new methods for discuss complex and controversial topics in groups in a way that creates more clarity, reduces misunderstandings and makes conversations more interesting, inspiring and fruitful.

This is achieved with a new moderation technique that slows down and relaxes the discussion and supports all speakers in formulating their statements in a more clear and focused manner.

The aim of each discussion is to further improve the method based on the experiences we make – at the same time, of course, we want to have an interesting evening and an engaging discussion.

Explanation by Stef Lenk:
Taboo (təˈbuː) (adjective) prohibited or restricted by social custom *

Social interactions are often unwittingly steered by expectation. Public life dictates a certain behavioural etiquette (ie. remain ‘cool’, act ‘responsibly’, hide weakness), while personal relationships often evolve into patterns of interaction based on how those who ‚know‘ us expect us to be. Talkin‘ Taboos is an event where strangers get together to discuss topics that rarely make it into everyday discourse. People we don’t know have nothing to judge us by ahead of time, which goes a long way to removing inhibitions in dialogue. Our aim is to look for places where our thoughts overlap and to exchange perspectives on issues we might otherwise struggle with alone.

* (the W.E.I.R.D [White, Educated, Industrialised, Rich, Democratic] blinders of my upbringing influence everything that appears here, and I both welcome and encourage challenges and criticism to that effect.)

It is difficult to predict exactly how the event will play out or feel. Each event is a test and can be enjoyable or disappointing for some participants. In any case, it’s always worth sticking around for a while after the moderated part – our participants are lovely, and it’s a great additional opportunity to exchange ideas.

It’s perfectly fine to just listen. You can decide for yourself at any time how active you want to be and will not be asked to speak. The only exception is at the beginning of the conversation, where we do a quick round where all participants say their names.

Each event lasts between 1.5 and 2 hours. Feel free to stay a bit longer to finish the snacks, chat with other participants, and deepen the conversation.

The venue is on the ground floor and accessible with wheelchairs. However, there are unfortunately no wheelchair-accessible bathrooms!
