Inspiring Minds & The Discussion Experiment

Invitation by Igor

Our very first online event is coming up, and it’s an intercontinental one 🙂

In this event, we are bringing together participants from China and Germany for an online exchange.

My co-organizer Karoline Rütter (Inspiring Minds) and our guest Long Qu will meet in Shanghai to discuss impressions they gathered between the two worlds — and we’ll join them virtually.

Drawing on Karo’s impressions as a visitor to China and Long’s insights, shaped by growing up between the two cultures as well as his work on Eastern and Western thinking, we’ll explore some differences, similarities, and nuances of everyday life in both countries.

As a starting point for our conversations, we’ll use a selection of photos Long and Karo will present, and enrich the discussion with perspectives from participants joining from both China and Germany.

To accommodate the different time zones, the event will begin at 12:00 (noon) German time and run until 14:00.

You can join for just the first hour or stay for the full event — we’ve designed the first part to be self-contained, so it fits into a lunch break.

Join us for this intercontinental discussion!

Each event is an experiment so it’s difficult to predict exactly how it will play out or feel 🙂

In some parts the exchange will be very structured, as the purpose of this event series is to find methods that help make such events as meaningful as possible.

This event is for anyone who is curious about the topic and/or the concept.

We aim to create spaces where people of all nationalities, ages, identities, and backgrounds feel welcome.

You don’t need to prepare anything, have strong opinions, or be extroverted to take part.

It’s perfectly fine to just listen. You will not be asked to speak. However, there might be breakout groups, i.e. short segments in which all participants talk in groups of 2-3 people. You do not have to participate in these; you can use the time for a break instead.

The full event lasts 2 hours. The format includes a one-hour core discussion suited for participants with limited time, followed by an optional second hour in which we deepen the discussion.

We will be speaking English and unfortunately there will be no translation, but Zoom offers automatically generated subtitles in case it is easier for you to understand if you can read along.

The Discussion Experiment is an ongoing series of events through which we continuously test methods that foster more meaningful and inspiring group conversations.

Among other things, we experiment with techniques that slow down discussions, improve clarity, and support participants in expressing their ideas more effectively.
