Traveling or taking advantage:
Is it even okay for people from higher-income countries to go on vacation to lower-income countries?*

Most people are fascinated by traveling. We want to see other parts of the world, broaden our horizons, get to know other ways of living as well as different customs. But what does it actually mean when people travel to countries with much lower incomes and weaker currencies?

Do we come as welcome guests and contribute to local economies, or do we take advantage of unfair economic conditions to experience cheap adventures in beautiful places?

What are the moral implications of traveling as a tourist or digital nomad to a country where our passports and currency give us privileges that seem unattainable for many of our hosts?

Join us for this experimental discussion where we will debate about the moral implications of traveling in an unequal world.

The discussion experiment is a method designed to discuss complex and controversial topics in groups in a way that creates more clarity, reduces misunderstandings and makes conversations more interesting, inspiring and fruitful.

This is achieved with a new moderation technique that slows down and relaxes the discussion and supports all speakers in formulating their statements in a very clear and focused manner.

The aim of these sessions is to further develop the technique while having insightful and entertaining conversations.

No, this format is not about competing against each other or about convincing people through rhetorical skill. Rather, it’s about finding common ground despite different opinions and exploring various aspects of a topic together.

It’s perfectly fine to just listen. You can decide for yourself at any time how active you want to be and will not be asked to speak. The only exception is at the beginning of the conversation, where we do a quick round where all participants say their names.

Participation is free and you don’t need to prepare anything, just bring curiosity and about 2 hours of time.

* There is a lot to talk about regarding this invitation. I wrote it more provocatively at the beginning and sought feedback from 3 politically knowledgeable friends to avoid reproducing racist and Eurocentric stereotypes. I think we will discuss all this at the event.

For now, I would just like to make clear that I do not equate „rich and poor“ with „good and bad“. Countries with lower incomes can be ahead of economically richer countries in many ways. But since financial resources play an important role in our world, I want to use this event to reflect on the role and responsibility of people who are privileged enough to travel long distances.
